Catrina Hollifield, Velma Thompson, Tracy Szymborski, LaTonia Hopper, Founder and Coordintror, Becky Wall, Haley Cook, and Paula Vess.
It is gratifying to know that 99 percent of every dollar raised by “Walk For Hope - Because We Care” goes directly to help people living and coping with cancer. The caring program raised $68,000 in their first three years to help cancer patients pay their bills and provide other financial assistance for things they might need to survive. At a recent luncheon “Walk For Hope” team captain meeting held at Cleveland Regional Hospital on Friday,June 3, a new logo and annual schedule was presented by ooordinator LaTonia Hopper. Information packets were distributed to all team captains. This year there will be additional fund raisers for the program, including a yard sale on Friday, August 19th from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds. Donations are presently being solicited for the yard sale and proceeds will be used by the Cleveland Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Center, to continue to help cancer patients and their “Because We Care Fund”. New or gently used items will be accepted. No clothing please. Items can be dropped off Monday through Friday at The Cancer Center, First Floor, Blumenthal Cancer Building (on your left of the hospital’s main entrance) 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until July 9th. For further information please call 980-487-3772. Another new event will be a Disco Party at Cleveland County Fairgrounds’ Goforth Hall on Friday, August 19th. The 70’s disco party will include prizes awarded to the best dressed male and female, and for the best dancer. Refreshments will be served and it promises to be a fun night for a great cause. It starts at 7p.m. and will continue til midnight. So get your platform shoes, butterfly collars and halter jumpsuits ready. Admission is only $15 in advance and $20 at the door. The 4th annual “Walk For Hope” walk and run will be held on Saturday, September 17th (new start time 8 a.m. for the run and 9 a.m. for the walk). Registration for the run and walk will be at Shelby City Park at 7 a.m. The cost is $10 for walkers and $25 for runners, and will include a free t-shirt. Also, just off the main lobby at the hospital every other Friday, there will be a Chick-fil-a day 11 a.m. to 1 p.m, with all proceeds going to the program. –M. A. Andrews
