11th Annual Nature Day At South Mountains State Park

Not just another day at the park… Build a bird house. Learn how to care for injured wildlife.  See lots of snakes.  Take a horse & wagon ride.   Listen to Appalachian music.  South Mountains State Park will host the 11th Annual Nature Day on Saturday, September 28th from 11:00 to 4:00 p.m.  A variety of programs, exhibits and music will be presented throughout the day.
Music is scheduled at the park picnic pavilion from 11:00 to 4:00 p.m. Brad Davis and Wiregrass will start at 11:00 with sounds of bluegrass.  Richard Beard and Sassafras Tea will follow with Southern Appalachian music. Tim and Faith Ingle and the “Heartstrings” musicians will inspire you with sounds of bluegrass gospel music. Michael Fox and his Possum Holler Ole Time String Band will put a smile on your face.
Exhibits will be displayed at the Jacob Fork Parking Area.  Exhibits include the USDA Wildlife Exhibit, Caring for Injured Wildlife, What’s in the Water, Beekeeping, the Snakes of North Carolina, Backpacking & Dutch Oven Cooking, Rocky River Trout Unlimited,  Bats & Owls, Astronomy, Turtles, The Spider Shack, the Rutherford Equestrian Trail Coalition, the Burke County Library System, Nature Art and more!
Children’s activities are scheduled throughout the day.  The Nature Day Obstacle Course, Making Animal Tracks, Nature Arts & Crafts and more will entertain and educate the little people.  A Costume Contest will be added this year.  Dress up in your best insect or animal costume and win a prize!  Free horse and wagon rides will also be available “round the barn.”  Pony rides will be offered by the Rutherford Equestrian Trails Coalition.   
The popular Build a Bird House Program will be held at the old park office.  Birdhouses will be assembled and given away to enthusiasts, while supplies last. Owl, bat and bird houses will also be given away as door prizes at the end of the day, so stick around!
Food and beverages will be available for purchase from South Mountains Volunteer Fire Department. Door prizes will be given away at 4:00 at the picnic pavilion.
