On Friday, August 12th the American Legion World Series returns to Shelby. On the campus of Shelby High School, Keeter Stadium is getting its last minute preparations for the big event, that will be held August 12th through the 16th. Over two million dollars have been invested in doubling the capacity of the stadium and improving Veterans Field. The capacity has been increased to 6,000 seats. Surrounding the stadium, new flag poles will display the flags from all fifty states. A new brick American Legion Headquarters building has been built overlooking the first base line. The canopies over the seats have been extended and a new state of the art scoreboard has been installed in right field. To accommodate ESPN, 600,000 candle power lighting is being installed. The dugouts are 30 inches below ground level, are seventy feet long, and have their own restrooms. Co-Chairman, Jim Horn said: in 2008 there was an eight million dollar economic impact on the area, when the last Series was held here. He expects the same or better results, even though this year the series is here five days as opposed to 2008’s two weeks. The committee has a bid in to make Shelby a permanent home for the American Legion World Series. By all indications, with intricate planning and the upgrade of the facility, you have to think it’s very possible!
