7th Inning Stretch's goal: Thank community

Five years ago, the American Legion World Series (ALWS) committee wanted to find a way to thank the Cleveland County community for all of the hard work and volunteer hours that go into making the series a success each year.
"Our organization really appreciates the tremendous job this community does in hosting and providing Southern hospitality for the ALWS participants and fans," says Eddie Holbrook, chair of the ALWS committee.
And so, the 7th Inning Stretch Festival was born. This year the event will be held August 5, 2017, beginning with a 5K at 8 a.m. The festival's activities will be from 3-10 p.m. that day. Returning to this year's festival will be the Little Miss American Legion World Series Pageant, children's inflatables, a corn hole tournament, characters for kids, carnival food vendors, a zip-thru obstacle course and the "Rat Race/Giant Hamster Balls" 72-foot inflatable racetrack.
Featured on the concert stage at this year's festival are a variety of local and nationally known bands. At 5:30 p.m. "The Southern Experience Band," from Kings Mountain, will kick off the evening with music influenced by country, blues, jazz and funk. They will be followed by local favorite "Dirty Grass Soul" at 7 p.m. Hailing from Shelby, this group has been entertaining audiences from across the Carolinas and beyond since their formation in 2011.
The headliner for the evening will be The Charlie Daniels Band, which will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. Daniels' varied career has spanned more than six decades and includes hits "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" and "Long Haired Country Boy." Daniels has performed overseas for US troops, and in 2014 he founded "The Journey Home Project," a nonprofit organization to help US veterans.
