A Young Man's Dream... Decisive, Determined, Dedicated.
Christian Mullis was shocked and surprised to find out that he was the recipient of the $5,000 Steve Porter Memorial Scholarship.
Christian Scott Mullis just turned 18 years of age this past June 17th. I sat down for this interview in the fellowship hall at David Memorial Baptist Church this past Sunday at 3 p.m. As I shared thoughts and ambitions with him, I realized how focused Christian is on his life and future. Very few young men are pursuing what he is and clearly know what, where, and how they are going to get there. Christian is a most appropriate name for him. His intention is to do Christian work anywhere in the world. The more the need, the more he wants to go and help. His ultimate goal is to be an ordained minister and registered nurse, then become a medical missionary.

What brought Christian Mullis to our attention, is out of 222 applicants he was selected to receive $5000 as the recipient of the “Steve Porter Memorial Scholarship”. The award commends Christian for his “dedication and academic achievements”.  It is a scholarship program given by IHG, the InterContinental Hotels Group. After a brief illness Steve Porter, President of IHG Americas, passed away on August 9, 2008. In honor of Steve’s devotion to “people taking care of people”, IHG founded the memorial scholarship. It is available to full-time employees of IHG’s children up to the age of 23. Christian’s mother works for IHG.

If you spend some time with Christian Mullis you eventually come to the conclusion that the one word that describes him best is “refreshing”!

His first missionary experience came when he went on a week long mission with World Changers at the age of eleven. Since then, he’s went on many more mission trips. More recently, he spent a summer in Peru and nine months in Oaxaca, Mexico from August 2009 to April 2010 through the Global Frontier Missions.

Christian wants to “make a mark” by serving communities academically and religiously. He likes teaching and working with kids through the youth committee. Prior to being home schooled the last two years of high school, he attended Kings Mountain High School. While there, he auditioned for the very first time for a part in the play “God Spell”.  Now, how prophetic is this? He was cast and played the part of John the Baptist!

His favorite part of the Bible is the story of Esther. He will tell you that his determination to become a medical missionary gets “stronger every day.” His mind is made up and his uncluttered life-style inspires you to believe that his goal will be achieved.

He begins his four year major course in Biblical Studies at Mid-Atlantic Christian in Elizabeth City this fall. His minor will be nursing. Christian Scott Mullis..... decisive, dedicated, and determined. Without a doubt he will definitely make his dream come true.
