Alice Jane Cannedy Borders

Mrs. Alice Jane Cannedy Borders departed this life on Friday, August 9, 2019 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, NC. Born on February 21, 1930 in Cleveland County, NC she was daughter of the late Alonzo and Eunice Williamson Cannedy and was the fifth oldest of their seven children.

Alice was a graduate of Washington High School in Waco, NC and furthered her education at E. Richardson Hospital of Nursing in Greensboro, NC where she received her nursing degree. Finding her life's profession early, Alice worked her entire working career as a nurse retiring from Long Island College Hospital in NY.

Alice relocated back to NC 24 years ago and rejoined Hopewell Baptist Church in Shelby. A quiet and simplistic person, she enjoyed volunteering at the Senior Center, following politics and was an avid reader even reading the newspaper from cover to cover.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mills Borders; three sons, Reggie Borders, Steve Borders and Mills Borders, Jr.; two brothers, Wardell Cannedy and William "Bill" Cannedy and three sisters, Christine Cannedy Wilson, Lottie Cannedy Webber and Ophelia Cannedy Camp.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two children, Gina Cummings of Maynard, MA and Benny Collins, Jr. of Shelby; one sister, Roshelle Cannedy of Shelby; grandchildren, Benny Collins, III., Alice Borders, Conor Cummings, Garvey Cummings, Corey Borders, Tiffany Borders, Bryan Borders and Corrinne Borders; several great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Hopewell Baptist Church. Burial will take place at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 2:00 PM at the church. Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloemortuary.com. Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
