Alton Berry McSwain was born January 21, 1932 in Cleveland County, NC. He was the middle of five siblings born to Berry McSwain and Eula Jane Brooks McSwain. He graduated in 1950 from Lattimore High School. Following high school he joined the Army, serving in the US Army 1 st Calvary Division, 5 th Infantry Regiment, Company G during the Korean War where he was stationed in Japan on Hokkaido Island. He married his loving wife Goldie Ann Whitener McSwain in 1967, and they celebrated 56 years together until her death in April 2023. Alton began working for Fiber Industries in the late sixties, where he spent 30 plus years before retiring from what had then become Hoechst Celanese Corporation in the late nineties.

He was a lifelong member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, and he continued to seeking Christ throughout his life. Over the years he served as a Deacon and on numerous committees, as well as singing in the choir and as a member of the Men's Chorus. He was also a faithful member of his Sunday School class, and was very involved in church missions, traveling with groups from Beaver Dam Baptist on multiple occasions to serve Appalachian communities in West Virginia.

Alton lived out the admonition of John to, "let's not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions." He was a man of few words, but quietly and constantly went about the business of lovingly taking care of his family, living out his faith, working hard and serving others. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Riding bicycles, walking the railroad, going for tractor rides and feeding the cows were all Granddaddy specialties. He was a blessing to many, and will be greatly missed. Alton was preceded in death by his wife, parents and three siblings.

Survivors include a son Scott McSwain (Jackie) of Shelby and daughter Julie McSwain Strom (Mark) of Milledgeville, GA, sister Dianne McSwain Ware (David) of Shelby and many nieces and nephews, 6 grandchildren: Samantha and Ross White (Jan) of Shelby, Travis McSwain and Wyatt McSwain of Shelby and Mattison and Walker Strom of Milledgeville, GA, as well as 8 great-grandchildren.
