American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82 selects students for Girls State
Jaelyn Smith

The American Legion Auxiliary Shelby Unit 82 selected two Cleveland County high school students to attend the 78th session of Tar Heel Girls State, June 12-18 at Catawba College in Salisbury.
The students are Jaelyn Smith of Burns High School and Jennifer Mackaman of Shelby High School.
Top North Carolina officials are among the distinguished leaders who address Girls State, a week-long practical study of the structure and operation of North Carolina State Government. During the week the students are grouped into cities and they organize their own local government, elect officers, prepare a city charter and conduct city activities. The citizens develop two fictitious political parties including party platforms, campaigns and conventions. They hold a statewide election. Parliamentary procedure is used to conduct all sessions, including legislative assemblies where bills and resolutions are drafted for the General Assembly. The installation of state officers, talent show and Girls State Chorus are highlights of the week's activities. The program is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of North Carolina. More information about the program is available on the web page at www.thgs.com.
More information about Unit 82 is available on Facebook at American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82, Shelby, N.C. The page includes notices of meetings, special events and information about membership eligibility.
American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves for nearly a century to meeting the needs of our nation's veterans, military and their families both here and abroad. They volunteer millions of hours yearly, with a value of nearly $2 billion. As part of the world's largest women's patriotic service organization, Auxiliary volunteers across the country also step up to honor veterans and military through annual scholarships and with ALA Girls State programs, teaching high school juniors to be leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism.
