Annual AARL Field Day
Shelby Amateur Radio Club and ARES of Cleveland County (sponsored by the Shelby Amateur Radio Club) will be holding their annual ARRL Field Day on June 22nd at 2PM at Cleveland County Fairgrounds.  The group will be operating 24 hours on emergency power to simulate operations during a disaster.  The event is open to the public so that anyone interested can come by and check out amateur radio.
This group most recently provided communication support to the City of Kings Mountain on May 18, 2013 for the Annual Over-the-Mountain Triathlon.  This was the sixth year that the Shelby Amateur Radio Club sponsored Amateur Radio Emergency Service group provided this valuable service.  It is estimated that the cost of this free public service, if a private company were hired, would be in the thousands of dollars when factoring in the cost per person/per hour and equipment.  ARES members volunteer their service to the Emergency Management, Red Cross and others like Kings Mountain Special Events without compensation.
While Amateur radio is a hobby, there are many reasons people become licensed amateur radio operators.  One reason is that they are interested in radio and electronics and want to experiment.  Another reason is because they want to talk around the world.  The main reason many amateurs are in the hobby and are allowed to keep their FCC license and frequencies is because of the numerous ways that amateur operators can provide community service.  To learn more about how you can become a licensed amateur radio operator see http://www.wedothat-radio.org/ and to find out how to become a member of ARES of Cleveland County or the Shelby Amateur Radio Club see http://shelbyhamfest.org or http://www.shelbyarc.org.
The public is invited to come out to the Cleveland County Fairgrounds Fire Station and see what Amateur Radio is all about.  There will be opportunities at the field day site allowing newcomers and inactive ham radio operators to try their hand at amateur radio!  Experience amateur radio first hand this month by visiting an ARRL Field Day Site.  There are many field day locations, to find one close to you http://www.arrl.org/field-day-locator.
The Shelby Amateur Radio Club also sponsors the Shelby Hamfest each Labor Day Weekend.  This year the hamfest will be held at Cleveland County Fairgrounds on August 31 & September 1, 2013.  This year’s Shelby Hamfest is also the ARRL Section Convention for 2013.  Plans are underway for this annual event that brings thousands of amateur radio operators and electronics enthusiast to the area.  For most recent news about the Shelby Hamfest visit their Facebook site at http://www.facebook.com/shelbyhamfest.
