The annual special livestock show for the North Shelby students was held once again at the Burns High school barn. It was held this year on Wednesday, October 7th. The first two years it was at the Cleveland County Fair and the last three years at Burns. With each student accompanying a live goat around the barn and then receiving a special medallion and stuffed toy to the applause of the crowd. A special photo was also included with the Burns High cheerleaders. It was all about smiles and cheers. The show is designated for North Shelby students with special needs and it affords every student the opportunity to participate in new experiences and agricultural events. Phyllis Elmore a teacher at Burns together with Will Thompson came up with the idea. Will is a very humble man and stays in the background. His reward is always seeing the students happy as they participate. Mrs. Elmore passed away in 2012 but expressed her desire to see the program continue. With the coordinated efforts of Burns high school health Sciences, metals and Agriculture Departments, Mr. Andy Elmore and family, Will Thompson, and Mr. Reithoffer from the Reithoffer shows who contributes the medalions, Mrs. Elmore's dream and passion of working with special need students and agriculture is kept alive. This year's event was the biggest to date. There were two shows. One at 10:30 am and the other at 12:30 pm. 24 students participated in the first show and 34 students in the second. The Burns High School barn was packed with friends, family and Burns students. It was truly a special event for those many special kids. A great day for great people!
