Area High School Students Receive Awards
Four area high school students have received awards in the oratorical contest sponsored by Shelby American Legion Post 82. Jacob Bell of Shelby High won first place, and will advance to the district competition on January 25th. Mitchell Harbin of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy was in second place; Aniya Glenn of Cleveland Early College High School was third; and Jacob Camp of Crest High School was fourth. Each contestant delivered a prepared oration on the constitution, then had five minutes to prepare a presentation on one of the amendments. The 13th Amendment, which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude except as punishment for crime, was selected for that morning. All contestants received a cash award from Contest Chairman Ludy Wilkie. The contest was held January 11th in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby.
