Bessie George

Bessie George was a beloved soul with a heart full of love and compassion, departed this world at the age of 75.

She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and an unwavering dedication to her family and community.

Born on April 22, 1948, in Shelby NC. Bessie was the youngest daughter and sixth of eight children born to Jezra Floyd Wallace Sr. and Mary Lou Tory Wallace.Bessie George was a woman of courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication as well as a cherished daughter, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Carletta Littlejohn-Sowell (Emmanuel), her sons Reginald Littlejohn and Chadlin George, along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bessie's love extended beyond generations, and her family was the heart of her world. She is also survived by brothers, Jezra Floyd Wallace, Jr. (Loretta) and Ricky Wallace (Carolyn); sister, Mary Helen Wallace.

Though Bessie faced the heartache of losing her son, Jeffrey George, her strength and resilience shone through, a testament to her unwavering spirit. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Gloria Winslow and Margie Degree; and brothers, Terry Wallace and John Wallace.

Bessie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her love for cruising on ships allowed her to explore the world and create cherished memories, especially with her sisters, Gloria and Mary Helen. She had a green thumb and a passion for gardening, as working outdoors in the yard brought her great joy.

A devoted member of Light Oak Missionary Baptist Church, Bessie served as Treasurer, exemplifying her commitment to her faith community. Her selflessness extended to the Light Oak Food Ministry, where her compassion touched the lives of those in need. Bessie's dedication to community service was further manifested in her active involvement in elections work, contributing to the democratic process with passion and integrity.

Bessie's love for her high school class of 1965 was evident in her active participation and cherished memories shared with classmates. Her enduring friendships reflected the bonds forged during those formative years.

Bessie's service to her country was exemplified during her 12 years in the US Air Force, where she was awarded The Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. Her commitment to duty, honor, and excellence reflected the core values of the military, leaving a lasting legacy of service.

As we remember Bessie George, let us celebrate a life well-lived--a life characterized by love, generosity, and community spirit. She leaves behind a void that will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her memory be a source of inspiration, and may her legacy continue to blossom in the hearts of those she touched.

Rest in peace, dear Bessie. Your legacy of love, faith, service, and patriotism will forever inspire and be eternally remembered.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Shoal Creek Baptist Church at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Webb Memorial Lawns.
