Betty Jean Swafford Hughes Conwell, 87, of Shelby peacefully passed away at her home on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 surrounded by her family and close friends.

She was a native of Cleveland County and a daughter of the late Luby Ellis Swafford and Mary Bridges Swafford.

Betty was preceded in death by two husbands, Don Hughes and Charles Conwell, and sister, Nellie Barroso.

Betty is survived by her children, Donna Southards and Barry Hughes (Julia); grandchildren, Andy Southards (Casey), Tyler Hughes (Tosha), Lexy Delozier (Rick) and Savannah Conwell; step-son, Robbie Conwell (Tammy); great-grandchildren, Talon, Zeke, Juliette and Lucan Delozier; and brother-in-law, Ortelio Barroso.

A graveside service will be at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 20, 2023 at Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby, NC with Dr. Ervin Price officiating. At other times, the family will be at the home.

The family wishes to publicly thank Carolina Caring and Betty's personal caregivers for the extraordinary love and compassion shown during this time.
