Betty Jo Leigh Carroll

Betty Jo Leigh Carroll, 89, of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, passed away on May 13, 2024 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby, North Carolina.

She was born April 6, 1935 in Cleveland County, North Carolina, daughter of the late Martin and Canses Harmon Leigh and was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Evans Carroll. Betty Jo was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law Mary Gault Carroll, brothers Jim, Herbert, Bill, and Howard Leigh, and sisters Eva Moss, Irene Barnett, Elizabeth McDaniel, and Lucy Lockridge. Betty Jo worked as a beautician, operating out of her home beauty shop for decades. She also worked at Mull's Greenhouses in Shelby for a number of years. Betty Jo was a longtime member at Second Baptist Church of Kings Mountain, where she often hosted get-togethers, dinner parties, and the like. Going out to eat was a favorite for Betty Jo, especially at fish camps. She loved to shop, taking her sisters and other family members wherever she could--she especially favored Hobby Lobby. She had a love for a variety of crafty pursuits, including crochet, quilting, ceramics, and painting. Betty Jo also employed a green thumb to keep up her beautiful yard and well-maintained, big garden where she cultivated both flowers and vegetables. She was a great cook, and always made enough for several rounds of leftovers. Betty Jo was an animal lover, looking after the squirrels and birds around her house and doting on her cat, Esther, and dog, Cooper. She never met a stranger; she would talk to anybody and took joy in learning their life story. Astonishingly, she managed never to be a day over 29 years old. Her family remembers her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. All who knew and loved her will cherish the memory of her love, affection, and wonderful personality.
