Betty Lee Peeler Johnson

Betty Lee Peeler Johnson, 94 of Lawndale went to meet her Savior on Wednesday, December 7, 2022.

She was born May 19, 1928, in Statesville to the late Lamar Lorenza Peeler and Eloise Ivester Peeler. She was the granddaughter of the late Peter Lorenza Peeler and Rebecca McClurd Peeler and Velus Ivester and Zula Edwards Ivester.

Betty attended Belwood High School and graduated in 1945. She was the salutatorian of her class and also received the Citizenship Award in 1945. Betty attended Gardner-Webb Junior College, graduating May 3, 1947. After her graduation from college, she accepted employment with the North Carolina Department of Transportation Division 12 in Shelby, working in the personnel department for 44 years.

Betty served as secretary to the Advisory Board for 2 years at the new Burns Middle School. She also did volunteer work at testing times at Burns Middle School. After retiring from the Department of Transportation, she did volunteer work at Casar Elementary School working in the Kindergarten Department for 7 years.

She also served on the Advisory Board of the State Employees Credit Union in Shelby. She was responsible for getting the ATM machine that is located in Fallston.

Betty has always been very active in her church, Kistler's United Methodist Church. She began teaching a Sunday school class at the age of 12. She has served as secretary to the Administrative Council on 3 different occasions and served as Treasurer of the church on 2 different occasions. Betty also served as Treasurer of the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the church choir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Glenn Howard Johnson and sister, Annie V. Peeler.

Survivors include her daughter, Glenda Childers and husband, Chris of Lawndale; two grandchildren, Christopher Glenn Childers and Christa LeeAnn Childers; two brothers-in-law, Bobby Bruner of Hidebran and Tommy Ekard of Hickory; sister-in-law, Linda Proctor and, husband, Danny of Lawndale and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank caregivers Brenda Strickland and Connie Coats for all of the devotion and care.

The family will receive friends on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Stamey- Tysinger Funeral Home.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 11:00 am at Kistler's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tony Matthews officiating.

The burial will follow the service in the Kistler's United Methodist Church Cemetery.
