Betty Searcy Lawing

Betty Searcy Lawing, age 89, died Monday, April 24, 2017 at her home. Born in Rutherford County on July 31, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Ed and Amanda Epley Searcy. In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by two brothers, Hugh Searcy and Kenneth Searcy; and three sisters, Florence Collins, Jennie Smith and Alva Wilson.

Betty is survived by her husband of 65 years, Claude M. Lawing Jr.; two daughters, Claudia L. Stroup and husband Matthew of Cherryville and Lisa L. McDowell and Tebin of Cherryville; Five grandchildren, Hannah McDowell Kiser and husband Zack, Cameron Stroup and wife Amber, Brandon McDowell, Justin McDowell and Landon Stroup; Great Grandson, Grayson Kiser; two brothers-in-law, Perry Lawing and wife Betty of Marion, Morrison Lawing and wife Shirley of Poquoson VA., four sisters-in-law, Rebecca Searcy of Hendersonville, Carolyn Wood of Forest City, Verlie Leatherwood of Black Mountain, and Janet Lawing of Marietta Ga.; and a host of many loving nieces and nephews.

Betty's life exemplified her love for Christ. It was evident in her love for her husband of 65 years, her family, and the service to her church and community. Her ministries included Education Director at Florence Baptist Church in Forest City and Sunday School teacher for young women and 1st graders for over 50 years at First Baptist Church in Shelby, where she was a member. In addition, she was a special education teacher at North Shelby for 26 years. Her joy for Christ overflowed in every aspect of her life. She will be remembered for her love of life, family, laughter, wisdom, and love and service for others.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at 2:00 pm in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church with Rev. Tony Tench and Dr. Robert Canoy officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm.
