Betty Spangler Dedmon

Betty Spangler Dedmon passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 21, 2018 in her home on the Dedmon Farm at the age of 90. She is predeceased by William F. (Bill) Dedmon her beloved husband of 53 years. She was the daughter of the late Arthur Lee and Lesta Eskridge Spangler. Betty was better known by close friends and family as "Maw". Betty played basketball and graduated from Piedmont High School. She later graduated from Kings College in Charlotte, N.C. After marrying Bill she worked for Dedmon's Livestock and later at Sealtest Dairy as a secretary. When Bill and Betty started Asphalt Paving of Shelby, Inc.in 1965 Betty served as financial secretary in their business. After Bill's death in 2000 Betty became the president of the company. During her presidency she was recognized as a Woman Business Enterprise. She remained president of the company until her death. Betty grew up as a faithful member of Double Shoals Baptist Church. She was an active member of Ross Grove Baptist Church where she served as church treasurer for 40 years. She also served a term on the Advisory Board for the Office of Institutional Advancement at Meredith College. Betty loved her family and always enjoyed times spent with them. Dixie her cherished Siamese cat was at her side for 17 years.

Betty is survived by her son Donald Gene Dedmon, Sr. and wife Delores of Shelby, and two daughters Krista Dedmon Kustra and husband Bob of Greenville, SC and Jan Dedmon Elder and husband Mike of Macon, NC She is also survived by seven grandchildren; Donna Michele Dedmon, Don Dedmon, Jr. and wife Tisha, Jenny Kustra French and husband Marty, Alison Kustra Byrum and husband William, Anna Kustra Morgan and husband Matt, Gretchen Elder Brayman and husband John, and Trent William Elder and fiancé Ashley Severin. Surviving great grandchildren are Matthew Dedmon and wife Ashley, Clay Dedmon, Gracie Johnson, Sydney Byrum, Carter Byrum, Wilson Byrum, Emerson Morgan, Cole Morgan, Alex French and fiancé Erica Kusztos, Austin French, Eleanor Brayman and Connor Brayman.

In addition to her parents and husband she is predeceased by one great grandson, Donald Gene Dedmon, III (Tripp) and four brothers; Arthur Lee Spangler, Jr., Hershel Spangler, Worth Spangler and Sammy Spangler.

The family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary at Ross Grove Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. The funeral will be at 11:00 with graveside burial to follow. Betty was an avid Carolina basketball fan. The family requests that you wear Carolina blue in celebration of her life.
