Bill Horn

Bill Horn died peacefully at his home December 30, 2024.

His 101st birthday was celebrated earlier in December. He was the son of Madeline and Thurman Horn and was born at home in Cleveland County.

Bill loved his family, not just his immediate family, but the many Horn and Simmons cousins with whom he played as a child and loved as an adult. The numerous Aunts and Uncles nurtured him with good food, fun adventures and got him out of trouble when needed!

His education at UNC-Chapel Hill was interrupted when he was called into service with the Army. He stayed in touch with Elaine Powell throughout college and his time in service. Elaine married Bill in 1946 and they shared 73 years together. Their two daughters, Chris and Cathryn (Mitchell) gave Bill plenty of opportunities to be a protective father.

Bill loved farming but he also enjoyed banking. He liked doing for others so volunteering with Civic groups, Salvation Army, Hospice, Potato Project and anything his church asked him to do kept him busy. Painting with Elaine and working in his workshop gave him reasons to create.

His five grandchildren, Clay (Lonna), Curt (Bobby), Madeline (Ryan), Jack (Katie) and MacMillan made him extremely proud and his three great grandchildren, George, Henry and Gisele were his loves.

Bill's life was filled with good friends and sweet neighbors. These last few years were more enjoyable because of the attention ministered to him by his caretakers.
