Brenda Renee Roseboro Oates

Brenda Renee Roseboro Oates was born on December 5, 1942, in Cleveland County, NC, to Mrs. Margaret Lucille Carson Roseboro and Mr. Willie Harvey Roseboro.

One of five children was called home to her eternal rest on May 18, 2025. Two siblings, Ralph and Kenneth, preceded her on that journey.
She was a graduate of Cleveland High School, Shelby, NC. Continuing her education, she attended Morristown College, Morristown, TN, receiving an AAS Degree in Secretarial Science. Unable to secure employment in her chosen major at that time, she was hired by Cleveland Cloth Mill as one of the first black women employed there as a machine operator. Other long-term employment included Fiber Industries and Fasco Motors from which she retired. After retirement, she continued to work part time. She was hired by the Cleveland County School System as a substitute assistant in the cafeteria.
Baking was a fulfilling hobby. She loved baking desserts, often gifting them to family and friends for birthdays and other special occasions. She also found pleasure in music - enjoying listening and even recording favorites to share with family.
She had a quiet, reserved presence, but a compassionate, giving spirit and a desire to be of service. Having been a previous member of Hopewell Baptist Church, she rejoined the church and attended Sunday School and worship services faithfully. She volunteered with the Visitation Ministry and also helped to serve meals for special events at the church when needed. Only her ill health kept her from continuing to be of service.
She will be sorely missed by her loving family, but the shared laughter and fun times will remain with us as cherished memories.
Left behind to mourn her are two sons, Carlos and Bradford Oates of Shelby; grandson, Jordan Oates, to whom she was deeply devoted; step-granddaughter, Kierra Pitter of Shelby; brother, Donald H. Roseboro of Shelby; and sister, Iris R. Dubinson-Gaylord of East Orange, NJ; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, including four special friends: Ms. Bessie Hector, Ms. Helen Edwards, Ms. Lillie Gibbs and Ms. Nicole Famble.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 30, 2025, at Hopewell Baptist Church, Shelby, NC.
