Fishing Tips: by Matt Arey
Weighting Jerkbaits
I have been in several situations on different lakes during the winter and early pre spawn months when the fish were just not real active and in a chasing mood. You had to put a bait right in front of their nose to get a bite.  A lot of times these fish may be suspended in that 15-25 ft. range which is deeper than most stock jerkbaits will go.  Here are a couple ways to weight your jerkbait in order to get them to down a little deeper and put them right in front of the fish.
1.  Changing Hooks - I change the hooks on almost all the hardbaits I buy anyway but if you want that bait to sink go to a size or two larger than the stock hooks.  As you change make sure you test the bait so you know exactly how fast the bait is actually sinking.
2.  Changing Split Rings - You can either add an extra set or remove the stock rings and replace them with a size or two larger.
3.  Using Suspend Strips -  Most of your local tackle dealers will carry these. You simply peel the individual strips off the sheet they come on and stick them to the belly of your jerkbait.
I use these methods only with jerkbaits that are already made to suspend right from the factory.  Also remember that different jerkbaits react to different water temperatures and water density. I have seen some factory baits sink very slowly in extremely cold water and some actually rise in hot water. Just use a trial and error method to find out exactly what will work best for you on that particular day.
