SIGHT FISHING FOR BEDDING BASS
Boat position and angle is one of the most important ingredients for being a successful sight fisherman. Many times when I thought I had a found a fish on a bed that was “uncatchable”, I was able to make a slight adjustment in my boat position and casting angle and next thing I knew the fish was in the boat.  Pay close attention to how the bass is reacting to your presence and your presentation.  If the fish continues to act nervous and is constantly moving in and out of the bed try changing angles and re-positioning your boat to give him and you a different look.  When the sun is out, use it to your advantage and always keep it at your back to make it harder for the bass to detect your presence.
When searching for bedding bass, being stealthy and undetected is extremely important. Keep your trolling motor on its lowest setting and use the wind or a push pole to help propel your boat through the shallows.  I always keep my electronics off when sight fishing and use the highest quality polarized sunglasses available. I prefer different lenses for cloudy days and sunny days.  I use Costa Del Mar sunglasses exclusively and prefer the 580 silver mirror lens for cloudy days and the 580 green mirror on sunny days.  I would also like to emphasize the important role that my Power Poles play in my sight fishing.  When approaching a bed or just the back of a pocket while searching, I can drop my power poles quietly without disturbing the bottom or water around me and scan the area for fish.  They also allow me to change my position on a bedding bass with ease.  I don’t have to worry about ropes, anchors, and all that mess which in turn can stir up the bottom and make a lot of commotion in the water spooking the fish I am after or others in the area that I haven’t seen yet.
