Burns Interact Club To Package 10,000 Meals
Mariah Webber, Beth Wilson, Brittany Horn and Taylor Wright gather some of the $2500 worth of coins.
This Saturday,  April 30th the Burns High Interact Club will package 10,000 meals in 2 hours in an effort to help end world hunger. Members of the club raised $2,500 through a school-wide coin drive and challenge in order to fund the project. More than forty volunteers will gather at Burns High on Saturday morning for a hands-on experience mixing, bagging, and boxing the meals, which will be sent to third world countries and distributed to children in orphanages and school lunch programs.
"This is our international project for the year," said Beth Wilson, Interact club president. "We have been working hard since November to raise the money we need and we are excited to finally see this happen." The Burns Interact students conduct several service projects during the school year, including one project that fosters international awareness and goodwill. This project is in partnership with Stop Hunger Now, an international organization committed to world hunger relief.
Volunteers  will include Burns High Interact students, Shelby Breakfast Rotary Club members, and Burns students who participate in the Communities in Schools Graduation Station. The assembly process will combine rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a flavoring mix that includes 12 essential vitamins and minerals into small meal packages.
The Burns Interactors held two school-wide coin drives to raise the money needed to cover the cost of the meals. Students spent 10 days counting and rolling the coins. The Burns Interact Club is sponsored by the Shelby Breakfast Rotary Club. Interact is an international service club for young people between the ages of 14 and 18. More than 40 Burns High students belong to the Burns chapter. They participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and initiative. More than 200,000 students in 110 countries are Interactors.    Info & Photo Provided by Rhonda Benfield
