Burns Masonry Programs Honors Seniors
The masonry program at Burns High School recently honored 11 graduating seniors. Students and guests attended a luncheon at Cleveland Country Club on May 5th. The annual masonry banquet is sponsored by Spake Concrete Products. Dan Spake addressed the students and encouraged them to set goals and pursue them. The students were presented with a trowel, jointer, and other masonry supplies.
Each graduate of the program successfully completes six course credits in masonry, which is one of eight Career & Technical Education programs offered at Burns. The 2011 graduates are: Jonathan Alley, Brian Bailey, Austin Boggs, Justin Buff, Neil Gantt, Chris Hubbard, Devin Kearley, Bobby McCall, Michael Pire, Dennis Price, and Ethan Winkler.
During their senior year, the students completed several hands on masonry projects in the community. They constructed retaining walls, a mailbox, a pigeon-hole wall, repaired a porch, underpinned a mobile home, and some larger projects included stone masonry on a home, building a brick wall at a church for an Eagle Scout project, and working with the metals manufacturing class to construct a new welcome sign for the town of Kingstown.
Representatives from Beam Construction attended the banquet. They are Susan Lewis, president, and Chad Day, general masonry superintendent. Beam Construction employs a number of students who graduate from the masonry program at Burns.
Several area companies within the industry were also represented. They include Palmetto Brick, Statesville Brick, Boren Brick, Boral Brick, and C Mix Mortar Company.
Dr. Jack Hamrick, Richard Hooker, and Kenneth Ledford from the Cleveland County School Board were in attendance along with Ann Caldwell, assistant principal at Burns, and Tony Fogleman, CTE Director for Cleveland County Schools. Masonry instructor at Burns is Richard Shull.
