Carl Maynard Spangler Jr.

Shelby - Mr. Carl Maynard Spangler Jr., 84, passed away at home Friday, June
16, with his family by his side.

Born May 17, 1933 in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Carl Maynard
Spangler, Sr. and Fannie Lou Kistler Spangler.

Mr. Spangler was a 1951 graduate of Piedmont High School and attended
Gardner Webb Junior College. He served in the US Army for four years and
then attended UNC Chapel Hill where he received his AB Degree in Chemistry
in 1959. Working at Fiber Industries and related industries from May 1960
through May 1990, he retired in 1990 as a human resources manager with
Fiber. A lifelong member of Double Shoals Baptist Church, Mr. Spangler has
served as chair of the deacons, Sunday school director, Sunday school
teacher and trustee.

Mr. Spangler received the Governor's award, Order of Long Leaf Pine, for his
volunteer work with the Boys Club. He was active in his community, serving
as past chairman of the United Way and Board of Directors of Upper Cleveland
Rescue; past president of the Boys Club, Children's Home, Life Enrichment
Center; past chairman and current trustee of Lawndale Historical Society;
current chairman of the Steering Committee Carolina Thread Trail of
Cleveland County as well as serving as one of its governing board members;
current board member of Gardner Webb Trustees where he has served four
terms; and current board chairman of Foothills Conservancy of North
Carolina.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty years, Faye Sparks Spangler; two
sons, Carl "Chuck" Spangler, III and wife Sabrina of Columbus and Dr.
Michael Spangler and wife Karen of Winston Salem; two daughters, Susan
Duncan and husband Thomas of Raleigh and Angela Anthis and husband Stephen
of Winston Salem; two brothers, Dale Spangler and Don Spangler and wife
Maxine both of Shelby; two sisters, Denice McKee and Dorothy Spangler both
of Shelby; and twelve grandchildren, Benjamin Duncan, Samuel Duncan, Carl
"Chip" Spangler, IV, Luke Spangler, John Michael Spangler, Bret Anthis,
Carson Anthis, Addie Anthis, Matthew Spangler, Nathan Spangler, Elise
Spangler, and Kate Spangler.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 1:00 PM to 2:45 PM on
Tuesday at Double Shoals Baptist Church.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Double Shoals
Baptist Church with the Dr. Brian Johnson officiating.

The burial will follow in the church cemetery.
