Carl Timothy Love, Sr.

Mr. Carl Timothy Love, Sr., was the seventh of ten children born to the late Otis and Lunette McKnight Love on July 4, 1940 in York, South Carolina. The Lord called him to his heavenly home on the morning of April 4, 2020 at his residence.

He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1958 where he excelled in academics and athletics. In 1962, he graduated from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL with a degree in Biology. Upon graduation he enlisted in the US Army with hopes to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. He was a medic during the Vietnam War and served as a Green Beret soldier; he was later honorably discharged after being wounded. After not being able to fulfill that dream of being a doctor, he worked as a medic for several years at the National Jewish Medical Hospital in Denver, Colorado. Eventually he chose to become what would be his God-given purpose - teaching. And a teacher he was! He taught at Green Bethel, Washington and Burns High Schools. He took his exemplary teaching skills to St. Croix Central High School on the island of St. Croix, USVI, where he was named Teacher of the Year during what would be his last yearof teaching. He was diagnosed with the debilitating disease, ankylosing spondylitis (severe arthritis of the spine), which led to his early retirement from teaching. He went on to facilitate adult learning classes at Cleveland Community College, where he also earned an Associates of Science degree in Environmental Science.Carl was a life-long learner.

Carl was baptized at Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church, in York, SC, at the age of 13 and then again as an adult, baptized alongside his brother-in-love and brother in Christ, Glenn. He was a faithful member of Durham United Methodist Church for over 40 years. He served as lay leader and Sunday School teacher until his health prevented him from doing so. He was well-versed in the Word and knew his bible. We often went to him to have bible study and discussion and just general advice. He was a man of high integrity and of good character.

In May 1966, he married the former, Helen Withrow. To this union, three children were born: Kassandra Lynette, Carl Timothy, II and Angela Marie. His love for his family was beyond measure. Carl was a diehard North Carolina Tarheels fan; a fan of the Dallas Cowboys and just sports in general. He loved watching old westerns and reading the Bible and having Bible discussion. He loved talking to everyone about the Lord.

In 1981, he joined the prestigious brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He was the epitome of the four cardinal principles of his beloved fraternity: manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift!! He served as the Keeper of Records and Seal for the Gamma Beta Beta Chapter in Shelby, NC. He was named the Omega Man of the Year in 1986 and then again in 1993.

He was predeceased in death by his only son, Carl Timothy Love, II; his parents and his siblings: William Otis Love, James Love, Samuel Love, Frances Jane Manigault, George Love, Robert Love and Ammie (Cookie) Davis.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen Withrow Love, his daughters, Kassandra Watson (Morris) of Wake Forest, NC; Angela Lowe (Keron)of Shelby, NC; his grandchildren, Kristian, Morris III (Trey), Keron II, Carl III (CT), and Khari; one great-grandchild, Morris IV (Kade); his sisters, Sara Burnett of Laurelton, NY and Catherine Armstrong of Clover, SC. Two brothers-in-law, Willie Carl Davis of York, SC and Joe Hunt of Charlotte, NC; sister-in-law, Karen Love of Washington, DC.; Jamilah Sinkler, Omar Porter and Nicolette Brown, who were like grandchildren to him; special lifetime friends, Foster Benjamin (Dottie) and William Bryant (Aggie); godchildren, Roslyn Christian, Lauren and Lindsay Montgomery and Quentin and Jeremy Schenck; a host of special nieces and nephews, family and friends and his brothers of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

Carl was an awesome husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He genuinely loved all of his family and friends and did all he could to encourage anyone he came in contact with. He was known for his "York" stories, which everyone loved to hear. One of his favorite sayings was "hot-toe-mighty"; he had a great sense of humor and was just a lovable person. He never complained despite the challenging, physical pain he suffered due to his ankylosing spondylitis. He endured many surgeries over the years and not once did he complain. He knew where his help came from and often said, "why complain? It won't change anything". This awesome man of God will be greatly missed by all who knew him and loved him.

Due to recent coronavirus state guidelines limiting the size of gatherings, the service for Mr. Love will be private. He may be viewed on Friday, April 10, 2020, at Durham United Methodist Church from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon. Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloemortuary.com.
