Caroline McCabe Godfrey

Caroline McCabe Godfrey, age 25, died Friday, December 14, 2018 at Atrium Cleveland in Shelby, NC. Born in Mecklenburg County on January 27, 1993, she was the daughter of Paul McCabe and Holly Rountree Godfrey of Grover, NC. Caroline can be described as "special needs" but this phrase was not always one that those who knew and loved Caroline would use. She was happy, energetic, determined, opinionated, flirtacious, impatient, preferred a schedule, insisted on exploring the world, demanded acceptance, recognized those people who fell in love with her, and communicated to all what she wanted. Anyone knew when Caroline was happy by her infectious grin and anyone knew when she was aggravated by the "fat tongue".

Caroline was a 2015 graduate of North Shelby School in Shelby, NC. She was taught and adored by some of the best special education teachers and staff in the state. For the last 3 years, she has been a participant at the Kings Mountain Life Enrichment Center. Caroline's purpose at LEC was to "be an adult" but it was soon discovered that this was not Caroline's sole purpose. Caroline shared her joy of life to all those who worked alongside her and to the devoted caregivers that loved her.

Caroline was born with a rare disorder that educated hundreds of her family members, caregivers, teachers, medical professionals, and friends. It is evident that through Caroline's life here on this earth, she touched hundreds of thousands of people. Her family hopes that those who knew and loved Caroline will continue to learn and educate others that everyone should be accepted by their abilities and not their disabilities. Caroline was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Glenn Ross and Jeanette Harry Rountree of Grover and her paternal grandfather, Paul M. Godfrey, Sr. of Tarboro, NC. Her beloved aunt, Jaquitha Reid, died nearly a year ago.

In addition to her parents, Caroline is survived by her grandmother, Bettie Ann Leggett Godfrey, of Morehead City, NC. Caroline's aunts and uncles are Gary and Mary Ann Gillikin of Newport, NC, James Reid of Kings Mountain, NC, Joel and Patsy Rountree of Grover, NC , and Bill and Jane Rountree of Mt. Airy. Caroline also is survived by many cousins who adored her and a loving caregiver, Malisa Littlejohn of Shelby, NC.

A Celebration of Caroline's Life will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at 2:00 pm at Long Creek Presbyterian Church with Dr. Charles Davenport officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Long Creek Presbyterian Church, 701 Long Creek Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086 or Life Enrichment Center, 222 Kings Mountain Blvd., Kings Mountain, NC 28086

Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Ms. Godfrey.
