CCC Names 2012 Academic Excellence Award Winner
Leah Stain has been named the 2012 Academic Excellence Award winner at Cleveland Community College. Stain is pursuing an Associate in Applied Science degree in Accounting and holds a 4.0 grade point average.
Stain says the close proximity of the school to her family and the inexpensive cost of tuition fit into her educational plan perfectly.  “Honestly, after I looked at several universities I knew CCC was the right choice for me,” she admits. “CCC had everything I was looking for to begin my education which made my decision very easy.”
Stain has not only excelled inside the classroom, but is also a true leader outside of the classroom where she serves as a Peer Tutor in accounting, business, and economics in CCC’s Student Success Center. “I have always enjoyed working with numbers and finances. Tutoring other students in these areas is something I really enjoy,” she says. “I definitely get excited when I see the light bulb come on for the students I tutor.”
As a homeschool student, beginning in the fourth grade, Stain says she was a little apprehensive about transitioning into a public school setting; especially on the college level, but her transition has been seamless. “I’ve always felt welcome, safe, and comfortable on campus and the instructors are incredibly helpful and friendly. Plus, the amount of resources available has been a wonderful tool in my success. CCC has prepared me in so many ways.”
The North Carolina Community College’s Academic Award winners are chosen from each of the 58 NC Community Colleges. The students are selected for their academic accomplishments and leadership ability. They also excel in the classroom and are dedicated to making a difference on their campuses and in their communities. Provided by Margo Greene
