CCC’s First General Instructor Training School A Success
Cleveland Community College recently announced the 100% pass rate of their inaugural General Instructor Training School.
“Those who are accepted into the GITS program are some of the best criminal justice personnel in the state of North Carolina,” said Aaron Vassey, Law Enforcement Training Coordinator at CCC.
The GITS is a two-week course that involves 80 hours of training by instructors with affiliation to law enforcement agencies in Cleveland County and surrounding areas. This course is designed to prepare criminal justice personnel planning to teach any course mandated by Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or the Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission. Students are also prepared to teach any non-mandated course that may be required by the respective sheriff or chief.
Students are required to successfully complete this course which involves two weeks of very intensive research, writing and presenting, and they must successfully complete the 100-question State examination and apply for certification as a probationary general instructor for one year. Within this first year they are required to teach a minimum of 12 hours and be evaluated before they can apply to be a full instructor.
“This very first GITS course couldn’t have been possible without the hard work of John Humphries, Jon Wright, and Tracy Curry of the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department; Dave Allen, and Mackie Latham of the North Carolina Highway Patrol; retired Shelby Police officer Jeff Clevenger, and Lisa Proctor of the Kings Mountain Police Department,” said Vassey.
This course is open to any and all police officers, sheriff’s deputies, detention officers, telecommunicators, probation/parole, and prison guards, all of which must have a minimum of 4 years of experience and a high school education.
