Celebrate National Farm-City Week with a 'Local Foods' Breakfast, November 20th
National Farm-City Week is November 16th-22nd
You are cordially invited to attend the annual Farm-City Week Breakfast, set for Tuesday, November 20th beginning at 7:30 am. It will be held in the Cleveland County Cooperative Extension auditorium in the County Office Building, located at 130 S. Post Road in Shelby.
Our program will spotlight local foods:
• The breakfast meal, graciously sponsored by Shelby Kiwanis Club, will be prepared on site from an assortment of local ingredients… farm-fresh eggs, grits, biscuits, honey, molasses, butter, country ham, pork sausage, bacon, livermush, sweet potatoes, and apple cider.
• The educational program will include a presentation on the local foods movement that is sweeping the nation and the economic, health, environmental and social benefits of eating locally.
• Carolina Farm Credit will present its Excellence in Agriculture Award to a notable local farmer during the breakfast.
• Cleveland County Farm Bureau will announce the winners of our student essay contest, who wrote on the theme, “Why We Should Eat Local Foods”.
History of Farm-City Week
Since 1955, the National Farm-City Council has supported educational programming to build interdependence between rural and urban citizens, and the President of the United Sates has annually proclaimed the week leading to and including Thanksgiving Day as National Farm-City® Week.
In recent years, the major focus of the programs and materials has been on consumer and classroom education. Student activity sheets, teacher packets, placemats and bookmarks are just a few of the materials the Council has created to support its mission.
In the past year, thousands of materials were used in classrooms, at Farm-City banquets, at civic club meetings and in other venues. Farm-City activities are grassroots in nature. Communities across the nation hold Farm-City events ranging from banquets to tours to job exchanges. We work closely with Agriculture in the Classroom programs in educating students and teachers about agriculture.
The event is free, but limited to the first 150 people who call (704) 482-4365 to reserve their seats.
