Chalk Fest and Y'Art Sale planned for June 2
Chalk Fest 2017

Color and creativity are in the forecast for Saturday, June 2, 2018, in uptown Shelby. On that date the Cleveland County Arts Council (CCAC) will sponsor the fifth annual Chalk Fest, a family-friendly sidewalk chalk art competition on the Court Square, from 9 a.m. - 12 noon. Children, adults, groups and individuals can sign up for an individual square on which they can create artwork during the Chalk Fest competition.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for families, children, adults - everyone - to come out and bring out their inner child and just be creative," says Shearra Miller, CCAC president. "It's amazing to see the incredible chalk art that gets created. So even for those who don't want to compete, it's a fun day to just come and look at the art."
In addition to the competition, there will also be a variety of activities for the whole family, including yard games, face painting by Meribell Sarate, Henna by Anna Leigh, and concessions by One of a Kind Creative Cotton Candy and Sweet Confessions Gourmet Candy Apples.
And for those who would like to purchase some art that is a little more long-lasting than sidewalk chalk art, the CCAC will also be hosting its annual Y'Art Sale.
"This will be a fun one-day event to benefit the Arts Council," says Miller. "There will be great deals on things like frames, art, pottery, easels, fabric, yarn, sewing machines, thread, art supplies and art tools."
The Y'Art Sale will take place at the the Arts Council building, 111 S. Washington St. in Shelby - just across the street from the Court Square where the Chalk Fest competition will be held.
"We hope folks will come out and make it a fun, family morning in uptown Shelby," says Miller.
Judging for the Chalk Fest competition will begin at 12 noon, with the winners announced around 1 p.m. Prizes are $125 for best in the group category (two or more people), $100 for best in the adult division (ages 18+), $50 for best in the youth division (ages 11 - 17), and $25 for best in the children's division (ages 10 and under).
