Charles Max Mathis

Charles Max Mathis passed over to his eternal home on Thursday August 5, 2021.

After years of declining health, Charles passed away peacefully, surrounded by constant reminders of the love of his devoted family and friends. As well as a reminder of the family members that were waiting to greet him in heaven.

Charles was a humble man and loved by all. Charles had a great will to live and had overcame many obstacles in his lifetime starting with contracting polio in the 1940's.

Charles was born to the late Oscar and Morie Hamrick Mathis, February 9, 1938. Charles was preceded in death by his faithful wife of 51 years Anita Faye Mathis, also his brothers and sisters, Bud Mathis, Nelson Mathis, Horace Mathis, Willie Mae Willis, Sadie Wyatt and Otis Mathis, and infant sister.

He is survived by his loving family: A son Charles Martin Mathis and wife Monica, Daughter Bonnie Mathis and Richard Norman.

Grandchildren: Shannon Smith and wife Heather, Joshua Mathis and wife Corey, April Glenn and husband Wade, Joseph Mathis, and Clarissa Mathis.

Great grandchildren: Caleb and Noah Smith, Madison, Troy and Gracie Mathis, Meadow and Cole Glenn, Lucas Mathis Robinson, Michael and Makayla Callahan and Kendyll Blackburn.

Charles was a member of Planview Baptist Church in Ellenboro, NC and served in the past as a deacon and Sunday School Superintendent.

In the last years Charles attended New Bethel Church in Shelby, NC and was member of the Jolly Elders, and a member of the Young Men's Bible Class.

Rev Mark Padgett will be conducting graveside service for family and friends. The outside graveside service will be on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Plainview Baptist Church in Ellenboro, NC at 10:00 am. Masks will be provided.

A special thanks to the blessings of caregivers, Monica Mathis, Cathy Webb, and Shirley Bridges that dedicated so much love, time, sacrifice and specialized care to allow Charles to stay at home doing his prolonged illness. Memorials and special thanks to Meals on Wheels and the Senior Center of Shelby that provided resources throughout the years.
