Charlotte’s Post 9, 1965 American Legion National Champs
The last time a North Carolina team took the American Legion National Championship was 1965. It was Post 9’s team from Charlotte. Their record was 35 wins and 8 loses. Prior to that victory, it was Shelby’s Post 82 that became the 1945 American Legion National Champions. Post 9 no longer exists, but the memories are very much in tact. Shown here, at a special get together in Smoke On The Square restaurant’s World Series Dining Room are eleven of the sixteen team members. Left to right: Dave Lemonds, Gerald Johnston, Garry Hill, Robert Rhodes, Bobby Irby, Bill Sellers, Coach Jack Lemonds, Chuck Ledford, Skip Hull, Ron Pagotta, and John Richards. The fellows enjoyed a great meal and shared stories from their earlier baseball days.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 –M.
