Christie Jefferies Cumberlander

Christie Jefferies Cumberlander, 55, of Shelby, NC, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Christie joined the Jefferies crew on October 24, 1969 in Gaffney, SC, to Horace and Mae (née Dukes) Jefferies. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alonzo and Novella Dukes, paternal grandmother, Ella Mae Jefferies; as well as her in-laws, Clyde Sr. and Evelyn Cumberlander. She was known for her lively spirit, beautiful hair and infectious smile.

Christie was a proud graduate of Crest High School's Class of 1988. Christie was the E&M for the State Convention of South Carolina. She was also the second vice president of the Congress of Christian Education and Youth, as well as, the South Carolina Christian Congress of Education Youth President. Christie went on to earn her Associate of Arts from Cleveland Community College, her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Limestone College and her Master of Education in Elementary Education from Grand Canyon University.

She was a treasured educator for Shelby City and Cleveland County School districts. Christie began her journey as a student bus driver for Crest High School in 1987. She served thousands of students for over 30 years and each of them will remember her in their own special way. Upon retiring, Christie received the 2022 EC Educator of Excellence award.

Whether you saw Christie's beautiful smile or her big hair bows first, you would always find her shadow, La'Kendra right there with her. Motherhood came easily to her and she welcomed the challenge with open arms. Christie made it known that no one would have a chance in being her man if her daughter didn't approve.

After passing the rigorous test of her three year old, Christie's middle school best friend, and lunch buddy, Clyde was welcomed to become the third Musketeer to the dynamic duo. "Bonnie" and Clyde became an official couple in February 1993 and her husband on November 22, 2014. Christie was Clyde's number one cheerleader and she was his muse as she followed and supported him through his musical journey, but Marvin Gaye's and Tammi Terrell's number one hit had a whole new meaning to her when Anthony Jr. (AJ), Logan and Avery made her a MiMi.

Christie is survived by her husband, Clyde Cumberlander Jr. of the home; daughter, La'Kendra Franklin (Anthony) of Fort Riley, KS; grandsons, Anthony Jr., Logan and Avery of Fort Riley, KS; parents, Horace and Mae Jefferies of Kingstown, NC; siblings, Horace M. Jefferies of Shelby, NC, Mary Jefferies of Gaffney, SC, Teresa Mauney of Lawndale, NC, and Tiffany Dabbs (Barnard) of Kingstown, NC; her sister-in-law, Crista Cumberlander of Greer, SC; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, god children and close friends.

She chose Destiny Life Center as her preferred home for community, fellowship and service to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Christie will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at Family Worship Center, Kings Mountain, NC. Enloe Mortuary was in charge of the services.
