City of Shelby; Regional Airport's Free Fly-In/Open House Saturday, June 10

The City of Shelby and the Shelby-Cleveland County Regional Airport will host its annual Fly-In and Open House on June 10, 2023, from 10 a.m., until 2 p.m.

The FREE event will be at the airport facility, located at 830 College Ave., Shelby, NC, and will give the community a chance to come out to the airport and tour their facility and see many airplanes and helicopters operations. BBQ, and hotdogs, along with shaved ice, will be available from vendors such as Beard-O Barbeque, Carolina Gourmet Snowballs, and Marine Corps League NC Foothills Detachment #1164. The Marines will also have vehicles on display.

The stars of the show are the airplanes and helicopters that fly in for the event for display, viewing or to give rides.

JAARS (Jungle Aviation And Radio Service) will be providing airplane and helicopter rides. The airplane rides are $30, and the helicopter rides are $35 and last about 10 minutes. JAARS is a Bible translation and Missions organization based in Waxhaw, NC.

Compass Aviation Maintenance, an airport Limited Fix Base Operator, will be open to educate and inform the public about their purpose and involvement in Missions Aviation.

Pilots will have the opportunity to sit in on a presentation by individuals representing the FAA on the topic of Aircraft Owner's Responsibilities. This is a discussion relating to maintenance, owner maintenance and record keeping. Attendees will receive Wing's credits for those enrolled or desiring to enroll in the FAA's safety program.

The Shelby CAP (Civil Air Patrol) Squadron, will be parking cars, giving information on their organization, and taking donations for a project they participate in, "Wreaths Across America". "Wreaths Across America" is a nonprofit organization whose primary activity isdistributing veteran's wreaths for placement on graves in military cemeteries.

Atrium Health will have one of its MedCenter Air Critical Care Transport Units (helicopters) on hand for viewing and the Blue Oval Car Club will also have vehicles on display for viewing if you are an automobile enthusiast.
