City Park to host egg hunt, helmet giveaway

Kids ages 2- 10 are invited to participate in the 2016 Shelby City Park Easter Egg Hunt & Cleveland County "Brain Bonanza for Kids," scheduled for March 19, 2016, at the City Park in Shelby. Children will be divided into three age groups and will have the opportunity to hunt for more than 6,000 candy-filled eggs, according to Shelby City Park Assistant Director David Fisher.
In addition to getting candy, kids can also receive a free bicycle helmet after watching a brief video about the importance of wearing helmets while biking, skateboarding or other such activities.
"March is Brain Injury Awareness Month, and we raise money throughout the year so that we can provide area kids with a free helmet," says Tammy Chapman, co-sponsor of the Brain Bonanza for Kids.
Chapman and Brain Bonanza co-sponsor Chris Hunley each have a son that has experienced brain injury, prompting them to raise awareness about the issue. "You don't have any idea what it's like until you have been through it," Chapman says.
Each child at the Brain Bonanza will be individually fitted for a helmet to ensure a perfect fit. "It's not worth it if it doesn't fit," Chapman says. Even adults and smaller children will be provided with a free helmet. "All we ask is that they watch the video," says Chapman.
Games, inflatables, the Carousel and Rotary train rides will all be available for free throughout the morning at the park.
The Brain Bonanza will be held inside the City Park gymnasium from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m., and the Egg Hunt will be outside in the park from 9:30 a.m. until noon.
