Cleveland County NAACP's Image Awards
Rev. Dr. Fidi R. Giles (pictured center) is presented with one of this year’s “Trailblazer Awards” at the first annual Cleveland County NAACP Image Award Banquet. The event was held on Saturday, Sept. 24th at the Neal Senior Center in Shelby. This Trailblazer was pastor at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church from 1958 to 1976. Preacher Giles was very active in the early civil rights years. He served as vocal President of the Cleveland County NAACP for nine years and taught  Baptist Doctrine in the National Sunday School Congress for five years. One of his many highlights was teaching the Old and New Testaments in Germany.  He presently resides at the Veterans Home in Anderson, S. C. There were three other “Trailblazer Awards” presented: Rev. Dr. R. E. Devoe; Dr. Theodore A. Powell; and Mr. Clarence C. Brantley. Other awards presented included medical, educator, community citizen, business, entertainer and media categories.The “Trailblazer Awards” were the most important and deserving at the banquet.
