Community Helps Hospice Patient Celebrate July 4th!

As the July 4th Holiday grew near, Hospice Cleveland County patient, Sharon Smith, told her volunteer, Sandy Russ, how much she would like to see fireworks one more time. Sandy, along with help from the Hospice staff, began to arrange for this to happen.

“This is what Hospice is all about” said Patti McMurry, Vice President of Access. “It is about living life to the fullest. Sharon talked about the fireworks with her massage therapist, nurses, volunteer, everyone! There was no way we were going to let July 4th pass without Sharon seeing fireworks!”

Because of health issues, Sharon, a patient at Wendover could not be transported in a car. Randall Deaton, with EMS, graciously agreed to transport Sharon to Cleveland Mall to see the fireworks. In addition to the assistance from EMS, Belk gave Sharon a $50 gift card and suggested that Sharon and her family wait in their air conditioned conference room until the fireworks started. Chick-fil-A at Cleveland Mall provided dinner for her family, including the EMS workers and Hospice staff that went to care for Sharon.

“Sharon was so excited!” exclaimed Kim Callahan, Director of Nursing Services at Wendover. “She dressed up in red, white, and blue and kept talking about how long it had been since she had been to a mall!”

Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a special time for Sharon. For more information about Hospice Cleveland County, including ways you can help, please call 704-487-4677 or visit our website at www.hospicecares.cc.
