County’s Jail Annex Prepares To Open
B Pod of the new jail annex facility, that will house 56 inmates. The facility also has handicap capabilities.
Cleveland County’s new jail annex (detention center) is nearing completion. This state of the art facility will be able to house 240 inmates and will eliminate the Sherriff’s office from having to outsource inmates to other counties. Presently, three counties, Rutherford, Bulcombe, and Gaston are housing Cleveland County inmates because of lack of space. Costing our County $50 a day. Sheriff Alan Norman likes that the present outsourcing cost will no longer be necessary. He also wants to upscale the old facility in order to take in and house 40 inmates from other counties. That reversal would result in Cleveland County gaining $2,000 a day. The Sheriff said: “ . . . not only will we save, but we will have the potential of bringing in needed revenue into the county. That would be a win-win situation for us.” The new jail will employee 54 full-time and 25 part-time officers. Another note: arraignments and visitations at the new annex will be by closed circuit television only.
