Crosswords: A Leap of Faith
If someone jumped off a cliff, would you follow? Would your answer change depending on who was behind you? Or what was at the bottom of the cliff? And what if God asked you to take that plunge?
What most “rational” people would think crazy is not always that. Sometimes the “irrational” is the most sane. Sometimes the inmates should be put in charge of the asylum. Just consider.
Abraham had waited for a son as long as the Cubs have waited for a pennant, but at God’s request he was ready to toss him in a fire. Moses talked to a bush. Gideon went to war only with soldiers who drank water like dogs. Daniel ate vegetables when he could have had steak. Hosea married a ______. John the Baptist moved to the desert, started his own line of camel-haired clothing, and lived on honey glazed grasshoppers. The Apostle John ate a burrito before bedtime, then wove a tale stranger than a Stephen King book and called it the future.
Jesus rode a donkey when better transportation was available. He physically interacted with lepers without the benefit of a Haz-mat suit.. He made eye salve with spit and clay. He made a whip and went after investment brokers (okay that one’s not so crazy). He bucked the establishment. He was obsessed with dying. He took a chance on you. He took a chance on me.
Everyday we dismiss individuals because their ideas seem absurd. We detain others because their actions simply don’t line up with “reasonably” minded people. We categorize and judge because we do not understand. We do not understand because we at times lack spiritual vision.
I’m not saying that we should be on the lookout for God’s next anointed at the local mental health facility. And I’m not suggesting you find a cliff from which to propel yourself to prove your spiritual worth (Satan tried to play that card). But thinking outside the box and actually getting out of the box might just be the most rational thing you ever do.
