Crosswords: Celebrity Witness
Chris Paul, a point guard for the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, recently signed a new contract to remain with the team. Without getting into specifics about bonuses, incentives, guarantees, etc., the NBA star will make around 20 million dollars per year. After signing his new deal Paul tweeted to friends and family, “God is so good.”
It’s great when God’s people recognize Him publicly and give Him thanks for all that comes their way. And although it shouldn’t matter, testimonies from sports’ stars and celebrities seem to make more people stand up and take notice than those from the average Joe. Their contact with the national press and their wide spread followings make their comments go viral instantaneously. Witnessing goes mainstream. Tim Tebow certainly comes to mind, along with others like basketball player Tim Duncan and golfer Zach Johnson.
One of the drawbacks to celebrity witnessing though is that their lives are what most people long for; a love of what they do and untold sums of money to fund their every desire. Who wouldn’t thank God if they were them? Even an atheist would come out of their fox hole if he or she had just signed a contract that would pay them 20 million a year.
Certainly there are great Godly spokespeople in the Bible who gained notoriety and fortunes while giving God all the credit. King David, his son Solomon, Abraham are but a few. But for every “king” there are a hundred paupers whom God has chosen to deliver His message. People just like you and me.
God is good. Make no mistake. But He’s good whether you’ve just signed a new multi-million dollar contract or you’re still making 10 dollars an hour. He’s good if you have the physical capabilities of a pro athlete or if you are stricken with Parkinson’s Disease. He’s good because of what He offers us outside of this world. Not what’s in it.
You don’t have to wait until your famous, rich or healthy to have a voice. You have one now if you have experienced what is really “good” about God. Salvation is worth far more than any sport’s agent can negotiate into a contract.
“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things to shame the strong. He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things - and the things that are not - to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before Him” (1 Corinthians 1: 27-29).
