Crosswords: Give it up
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matt. 6 19-20).
A hundred years from now there’s a good chance that someone you do not know or are not related to will be living on the piece of property you now call your own. Your bank accounts will have been closed out and the moneys in them will have been long spent. In all likelihood, with the exception of a family reunion, your name will never be uttered again. For all practical purposes you will no longer be relevant.
What we possess today we will not tomorrow. Just as our bodies are swallowed up by the earth so shall be the fate of all we have labored over, sweated over and stressed over. Except for a nice set of clothes and a shiny box we exit this world the same way in which we enter.
Materially speaking you certainly can’t take it with you. And for that matter why would you want to? From what I’ve read it would be like transplanting Astro-Turf to the golf course at Augusta National. Yet spiritually speaking, and that is at the heart of what Jesus said, we can put something in the bank to take with us to heaven. What we’ve given away.
“Treasures in heaven “ are simply what we have done for God and ultimately for others while on this earth. The time we have devoted to others when they were at their breaking point. The money we have invested into the lives of those who need only a little help to get back on track. The faith from which our hope lies. Our hearts. In short, whatever we are willing to relinquish.
Sure we may get burned. It’s possible that our generosity will come back and bite us. It happens everyday. It happened to Jesus. But trying to hold on to something you’re going to lose anyway is just plain foolish.
