Cub Scout Pack 101 Litter Sweep
Cub Scout and Mom picking up litter.
On Saturday, July 26th, the 101st Cub Scout Pack of Shelby was released in Uptown Shelby to pick up litter, recyclables and other debris strewn across the cityscape.  Several bags of trash and recyclables were gathered and the total weight of waste taken off the streets was about 100 pounds!  It just goes to show that these little cub scouts can achieve big successes.
A national litter study done by Keep America Beautiful in 2009 found that people under 30 are much more likely to intentionally litter than people who are older. The study also found that individuals are more prone to litter into an environment that is already littered however, a clean environment encourages proper waste disposal.
The Scouts are taught early on about the importance of community service.  These types of activities foster a sense of ownership and responsibility for their community that can turn into solid values as they grow.  In the case of waste reduction, these scouts get to see first-hand how cleaning an environment helps it stay cleaner longer.  Community service also builds comradery and in the form of a litter sweep, it is fun!  Keep Shelby Beautiful thanks all the participants for putting their time and energy towards the betterment of this beautiful community.
VOLUNTEERS are welcome to join Keep Shelby Beautiful for litter sweeps. If you have an idea for a litter sweep location or would like to participate in a pre-planned event, please contact the KSB Coordinator, Jordan Tubbs at jordan.tubbs@cityofshelby.com or 704-484-6829. We can help!
