Cherryville - Mr. D. Ned Costner, 85, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 at his residence.

Ned was born on January 2, 1935 in Gaston County, NC son of the late Lional Sylvanus Costner and Virgie Ora Hoyle Costner. He was a 1953 graduate of Cherryville High School and a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne University. During his teaching career Ned taught in Gaston and Cleveland County Schools and also in Florida. Ned was also a very talented carpenter. He enjoyed to travel and loved going to Topsail Beach to fish. Ned was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cherryville and a supporter of the outreach ministries of the church.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a half-brother, Lawrence Edward Costner and a half-sister, Beulah Costner Blanton.

Survivors include his nieces and a nephew, Brenda Fitch and husband Dewey; Ella Grigg and husband Ray; and a nephew Marty Costner all of Cherryville and Janie Kirby and husband Bruce of Florida.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic the family will have a private graveside service at St. John's Lutheran Church Cemetery. A public memorial service will be held at a later date.
