David Reed Parker, PhD

Dr. David Reed Parker, PhD, passed away on February 12, 2025, in Shelby, North Carolina, at the age of 58.

Born on February 21, 1966, in Atlanta, Georgia, David dedicated his life to education, family, and music. David earned his Bachelor of Arts from Furman University before continuing his studies at the UNC-Chapel Hill, where he was awarded both his master's degree and doctorate in Medieval Literature.

In his youth, David earned his Eagle Scout badge and went on to be an active member and manager of the Furman Singers in college. In his professional career, he was an English professor for 20 years, giving insight and guidance to students about the wisdom and lessons found in stories from ancient to contemporary. More recently he developed a thriving educational consulting business, where he guided high school students in choosing colleges best for them, as well as, finding their voice for writing their own personal stories in their college application essays. He reveled in the interesting students he was able to meet from all over the world through this work.

Beyond his professional life, David was a devoted husband to his love, Emily, and a loving father to his remarkable sons, Finn and Jack. He cherished every moment spent with them, whether it was sharing stories, cracking jokes, offering guidance, or simply enjoying each other's company. He brought conversation and humor to every family gathering, engaging his siblings, niece, nephew and parents in thoughtful and clever insights on interests close to each of them.

David found joy in music and was an accomplished guitarist. Whether playing at home or performing at monthly gigs, music was a source of expression and connection for him. He was known for his giving nature, sharp sense of humor, and ability to offer sound advice when it was needed most.

David is survived by his wife Emily; two children Jack and Finn; parents Jack and Reed Parker; brother Andrew (Sean) Parker; sister Suellen (Lyons) Parker- Shockley; in-laws Buddy and Mary Johnson; nephew Jimmy; niece Juno.

David's legacy lives on through the lives he touched as an educator, mentor, musician, husband, father, son, brother, and friend. His memory will continue to bring comfort to those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM February 16, 2025, at Central United Methodist Church in Shelby, North Carolina (200 E Marion St) with Rev. David Lee officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow the service at Sunset Cemetery.
