Delbert "Del" John Ligon
Delbert "Del" John Ligon, age 71, of Spindale, NC, passed away Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills. Del was born July 27, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Delbert William Ligon and Marie Belcore Barlow. Del honorably served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After his military service he worked for many years in the hospitality industry in the Jacksonville, NC area and in Chicago, Illinois as a chef. He owned and operated two restaurants in Jacksonville, NC; Marie's Italian Beef and Chicago Cafe and Bakery. After moving to the Rutherfordton County area in 2008, Del became active in the Cpl. Chris S. Ebert Marine Corps League detachment #1221 and served several years as Commandant. He was truly dedicated to his family and to his country.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Rudena "Rudi" Gibbs Ligon; son, Scott Anthony Ligon of Jacksonville, NC; daughter, Candace Ligon Burns (Roger) of Hubert, NC; stepsons, Robert Christopher "Chris" Brown of San Francisco, CA; Bishop Kevin Scott Brown (Caroline) of Wilmington, DE; Vincent Gregory Brown (Debra) of Forest City, NC; and James "Rocky" Lawson Fallon, Jr. of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Hayden Anthony Ligon and Zoey Marie Burns; and ten step-grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at the Marine Corps League Headquarters, 120 West Trade St, Forest City, NC. A flag presentation will be conducted by the Marine Corps League in honor of Mr. Ligon's service to his country.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043 or to the Cpl. Chris S. Ebert Marine Corps League detachment #1221, 120 West Trade Street, Forest City, NC 28043.
