Donald Edward Newman Sr.

Donald Edward Newman Sr., lovingly known as Donn, age 84, of Shelby, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026.

Born on December 11, 1941, Donn lived a life marked by dedication, strength, and deep love for his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps beginning on May 11, 1959. He attained the rank of Private First Class (E-2) and served four years as an 0341 Mortarman. Stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, he earned the Marksman Rifle Badge and the Good Conduct Medal, reflecting his discipline, character, and commitment to service.

After his time in the military, Donn devoted 59 years to the HVAC industry. His skill, knowledge, and strong work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues and customers alike, and he became a trusted leader and mentor to many in the field who looked to him for guidance and wisdom. He also served as an official tech advisor for the IHRA, combining his technical expertise with his lifelong passion for cars. Donn loved racing and working on cars. He enjoyed music and could often be found watching his favorite science fiction movies. He also loved attending Bible study and learning about the Word of God, always looking forward to his Wednesday morning gatherings with his colleagues at CSI Mechanical. Whether in the garage or at home with family, he found joy in the things he loved most.

Above all, Donn was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared 37 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Earlene C. Newman, building a life rooted in commitment, love, and partnership. He is also survived by his daughters, Loretta Roche and Donna Cannon and her husband, Eric; eleven grandchildren, Mathew Newman, Ashley Frye, Shane Newman, Brooke Thompson, Chad Davis, Anthony Davis, Randy Birch, Austin Birch, Christy Jarrell, Brent Newman, and Justin Gregory; and 29 cherished great-grandchildren who will continue to carry forward his legacy. Among his great-grandchildren, he lovingly raised four as his own: Ethan Jarrell, Harlie Jarrell, Mason Jarrell, and Nevaeh Shoemaker, who held a particularly special place in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Loretta Patton and Hobart Newman; siblings, Geraldine Glenn, Rita Freer, and David Patton; children, Teresa Gregory, Gina Strausser, and Donn Newman II; and grandsons, Christopher Newman and Casey Gregory. Donn will be remembered as hardworking, loyal, and deeply devoted to his family. His strength, wisdom, and steady presence will be greatly missed, but never forgotten. The lessons he shared about honor, perseverance, and love will live on in all who knew him.

A visitation will be held Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home & Crematory beginning at 5:30 PM, followed by a memorial service at 6:30 PM with military honors.

Though he has laid down his tools and quieted the engines he loved, his memory will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
