Donald R. "Don" Porter, 76, passed away peacefully at his residence on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 surrounded by his family.

Don was born on April 23, 1947 in Gaston County, NC a son of the late Henry Lee Porter and Euzelia McSwain Porter. He was owner and operator of Don's Handy Mart in Cherryville. Don was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cherryville where he was a member of the Helpful Few Sunday school class and also the Keenagers. He served in the U.S Army. Don loved and cherished his family. He enjoyed being together with them and especially supporting his grandchildren during baseball games and other sporting events.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Carol Porter.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Sandra Tillman Porter of the home; two daughters, Dana Gantt and husband Jeff of Cherryville; Amy Heavner and husband Barry of Crouse; four grandchildren, Casey Glover and husband Josh; Tyler Gantt and wife Kristin; Chase Abernathy and Ryder Abernathy; three great grandchildren, Raelie and Reed Glover and Olivia Gantt; a brother, Jerry Porter; three sisters, Carolyn and Jacob Rhyne; Frances and Gene Dellinger and Terri and Rick Childers; a brother-in-law, Buddy Tillman. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cherryville with the Rev. Wayne Key officiating.

A private entombment will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park in Shelby.
