Doris Marie Altis Kirkendall
BLAIRSVILLE, GA -- Mrs. Doris Marie Altis Kirkendall of Blairsville, formerly of Troutman, NC, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2012 at United General Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Kirkendall had been a resident of Blairsville for five years. She was of the Methodist faith.
Mrs. Kirkendall was born Oct. 6, 1926 in Roanoke, VA to the late O.M. Altis and Dora Catherine Altis Alexander. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judson W. Kirkendall.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Wayne Hamilton of Blairsville; grandchildren, Bill Hamilton and Denise and Dixie Hamilton Baker and Mike, all of Cumming, GA; four great-grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, Spencer, Hanna, Will and Avery; step-brothers, Harvey (Monie) and Clyde Alexander of Charlotte, NC; special friends, Wilma Price, P.J. Bass and Breanne Marie Bass, her namesake, of Mooresville, NC; her life-long friend, Gladys Dixon of Shelby; three cousins, Joyce, Helen and Violet in Virginia; and other friends and relatives.
Mrs. Kirkendall worked hard well into her seventies. She provided for her family by working in a textile mill and later, cooking in restaurants, a job she enjoyed. She was known for her cooking, mostly cakes and pies, which she donated to bake sales, gave to friends and family, or sold to restaurants. She also had a beautiful alto singing voice and sang in the church choir for many years. Her favorite hymn was "The Old Rugged Cross".
Mrs. Kirkendall's greatest achievement was when she got her license in Cosmetology in the early 1970s and briefly had a shop in her home until moving to Troutman, where she, with her husband, managed a campground on Lake Norman, some of the happiest times of her life.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Cemetery, with the Rev. Tim Ware officiating. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, memorials may be made to Mrs. Kirkendall's favorite charity, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, www.stjude.org or by calling 1-800-822-6344.
