Dr. F. E. “Ace” Richards
 Dr. Richards, 83, died peacefully Sunday, September 16, 2012 at Kings Mountain Hospice House surrounded by his family.  He was born August 15, 1929 to Althea Wright and Henry F. Richards of Mission, TX where he spent his childhood.  He graduated from the University of Texas, earned his Master’s degree at Lamar University, Beaumont, TX, and received his doctorate at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.  Ace became an excellent educator, father and a friend to many.  He led the Business Dept at Arkansas College (Lyon College) in Batesville, before coming to Gardner-Webb University.  He also taught at Texas A&I University, Limestone University and CPCC.  Ace was a devoted Rotarian in the Shelby Rotary Club where he was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow.  A lifelong Presbyterian, he was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church where he served the church as a deacon and elder and helped with the Winter Night Shelter.  He was an Eagle Scout and a Cubmaster.  Camping and sailing were among the things he enjoyed with his sons.  CRMC Volunteering and “Keep Shelby Beautiful” were other special interests.

 

Later in life, Ace spent happy hours at the Life Enrichment Center.  He developed friendships with fellow participants and staff whom he loved and who loved him; for which the family will be ever grateful.

 

Ace loved to travel with his beloved wife of 58 years, Jo Ann, especially visiting his three sons and their families: Scott (Meg), Pueblo, CO, Ed (Mary), Kings Mountain, NC, and Phil (Diana), Batesville, AR; the eleven grandchildren: Colin (Courtney), Ian, Kate, Nathan, and Duncan of CO, Kyle and Claire of Kings Mountain, Eileen (Steele) Scroggin of TN, Erin, Anna and Abby of AR.

 

Ace leaves good friends: Doug Carlisle, Marve Weber and Larry Moore; loving caregivers: Deann Peterson, Edna and Veronica Battle, and special Hospice RN at home, Heather Willis; his devoted Schnauzer, Shelby.

 

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Shelby Presbyterian Church.  Dr. Luke Harkey will be officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
