Dr. Larry Lowell Sale

Dr. Larry Lowell Sale, 83, passed away Saturday April 1, 2023 at his residence.

Born in Wilkes County, NC on September 8, 1939, Dr. Sale was the son of the late Dana William and Eva Eatmon Sale. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Janice Casey Sale; two sisters, Miriam Sale Bowers and Lorene Sale Colbert; two brothers, John Sale and Dwight Sale.

He is survived by his daughter, Kelly S. Bridges and husband Brett K. Bridges, grandson, Matt Bridges and girlfriend Anne Elliott Taylor; a son, Lowell W. Sale and wife Anne Wray Sale; grandson, Patrick Sale; and a sister-in-law, Janet Moody.

Dr. Sale graduated from East Wilkes High School in 1958. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Appalachian State University and his Doctor of Education (Ed. D) degree from Indiana University.

He began his professional career as a teacher in the Winston-Salem Public Schools in Winston-Salem, NC. Later he served as a teacher at Appalachian Elementary School in Boone, NC. He served on the staff of Indiana University, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Gardner-Webb University, Charleston Southern University, and Bridgewater College.

Dr. Sale served Gardner-Webb University for nineteen years. He came to Gardner-Webb in 1971 to help develop a senior college teacher education program and later served as Director of Teacher Education. In 1978, he provided leadership for the development of the Greater Opportunities for Adult Learners (GOAL) program designed to enable working adults to complete requirements for a senior college degree. Dr. Sale provided leadership for the establishment of sixteen off-campus regional centers throughout North and South Carolina. He later provided leadership for the development of the Graduate Program in Education and taught the first graduate education course at Gardner-Webb University.

Dr. Sale was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church where he taught a Sunday School class for many years. He loved his family, his church, his community, and helping others succeed in life.

A Funeral service will be held on Monday April 3rd, 2023, 11am, at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Carroll Page and Rev. Keith Dixon officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service beginning at 10am.

Memorial donations can be made to Boiling Springs Baptist Church, Gardner-Webb University, the Cleveland County Schools Educational Foundation, or Hospice of Cleveland County.
